About Sefla Fuhrman
Sefla Fuhrman is a gifted, compassionate, and hardworking educator who focuses on assisting people from all walks of life to realize their goals and aspirations. She endeavours to determine what distinguishes individuals, where their abilities reside, and how to optimize them in pursuit of their long-term objectives.
Sefla Fuhrman always knew she would devote her life to assisting others growing up. This was apparent as early as her senior school years. She was always one of the first students to offer for projects, and she took the time to assist her peers with anything they required. She was inspired to volunteer after hearing stories about her mother's cousin in one of the earliest Peace Corps Volunteers groups. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Washington in 1996.
Upon graduation, Sefla Fuhrman joined the Peace Corps and spent two years teaching English to speakers of other languages in Guinea, West Africa. There, she honed her grant-writing and community development skills and secured funds to build an elementary school; received a grant to assist two women's cooperative gardening groups in two separate villages; established the country's first seed bank; and received funds to acquire books for an empty library and librarian training. In addition, Sefla Fuhrman was a spokesperson for the Women In Development group in Guinea, which aids women in attending school, acquiring the training necessary to start small enterprises, and addressing health care accessibility.
In 2001, she graduated from Syracuse University with a Master of Arts in Public Administration. She was also the Empowering Girls Program Manager for Girls Inc. of CNY. Clark County in Las Vegas, Nevada, offered Sefla Fuhrman a highly competitive Management Analyst Internship shortly after she graduated. During graduate school and her time in Las Vegas, she learned how to apply her classroom-acquired abilities to the common good by integrating classroom knowledge with real-world experience.
Sefla Fuhrman would receive her doctorate in Urban Studies from the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. During her tenure in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina, one of the costliest hurricanes in U.S. history, significantly impacted her. It took her an additional decade to earn her PhD due to Hurricane Katrina, but this did not stop her. Due to the effects of this natural calamity, she lost all of her things and had to start her life again from scratch. Nonetheless, she was committed to demonstrating the resiliency of women in nontraditional industries through her PhD degree, which she completed. She persevered despite the hurricane's delays and earned her degree while still providing aid to people in need.
In addition, Fuhrman's mother authored a book about her, in which she discusses the effects of Hurricane Katrina from a cat's perspective. It is titled The Adventures of Koubla and blends Fuhrman's fondness for cats with Katrina's devastating impact on New Orleans residents. This is a beautiful book for all ages that illustrates Fuhrman's passion for the region.
During her PhD studies, she conducted dissertation research on women in nontraditional occupations. She took the time to conduct interviews with a large number of individuals to learn what it was like to pursue a career that was not considered "traditional" for women, as well as the obstacles they had to overcome and the strategies they could share with others seeking to build careers in similar fields. She also conducted telephone surveys to search for societal themes and cross-sections, gleaning insights she might apply to other aspects of her job. She also focused on fieldwork in the construction sector, learning what it was like to pursue a career in a male-dominated area as a woman. During her dissertation research, she gained immense knowledge and successfully defended her dissertation to receive her PhD.
